Detective Raymond Mallard doesn’t believe in angels or demons. A disillusioned police officer still healing from the death of a partner, he is uncertain about his future on the job, and the last thing he wants to do is investigate a serial killer. He is forced to do just that, however, when the wife of a fellow officer is found dead, posed like a work of classical art.

Mallard and his new partner soon connect a long series of murders to one man. The problem? He has a firm alibi, provided by his boss, Leviathan Langston.

Langston is a business mogul with a very specific interest in art. He buys and collects fertility symbols, and he seems to exude a dark sensuality to anyone who gets within his reach. Langston is an incubus, with the power to seduce and control almost anyone, regardless of the costs, regardless of their own values or beliefs.

In order to solve the murders and bring the killer to justice, Mallard is forced to accept the reality of fallen angels, caught between heaven and hell; and he has to do it without getting caught in the seductive web himself. This it the case that will lead Detective Mallard to question everything he’s ever taken for granted, including his own sanity.

This "Raymond Mallard Mystery" is, in one way, the familiar story of the star detective hunting down the serial killer. But in another way, it's the story of this man, Raymond Mallard, coming to grips with a whole new world view. What we have here is a battle of the ordinary versus the extraordinary, the conventional versus the exceptional and, of course, the good versus the evil. If you can't tell, I loved it! And one more reason to love it is the language- Jay Ingram plays with words like a detective toying with a suspect, and we get to read sentences like, "Blue and red lights were silently flashing, breaking the darkness with a promise of something more than shadows", and "It didn't help that I hated McClain with a fine, ripened hatred, just this side of red", or "You could feel the mixing of alcohol and sadness, hope and sorrow, perfume and night..." The combination kept me reading right on through till the end.

If I Should Die Before I Wake edition by Jay LaVelle Ingram Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Loved this book! It was full of twists and turns....never knew what was coming next. Thought I had it figured out, but then another twist! Would love for a sequel....find out what happens next to Raymond Mallard! Recommend it!
This first novel involving the main character, Raymond Mallard, has got to be the first of many. The "best Detective in Baltimore" is one of the best noir-style characters I've encountered in a long time. Dry wit, ornery personality and top-notch detecting lend a compelling blend to this new sleuth. Now THIS particular story is great on its own, don't get me wrong. We've got a serial killer somewhere in the midst of an interesting mix of suspects, including a chef, a jilted lover, a business competitor and a demon! It's that last one that gives the story a hell of a twist. I'd love to see Raymond have to face off with more.
This book was fantastic. Other reviews touched on this, but it's worth repeating that the internal struggles of the main character, Raymond, gave the story a wonderful texture and depth. Raymond himself - his admirable qualities and his foibles - kept my interest as much as the "whodunit" elements of the mystery itself, which started out as an interesting and conventional, very plausible mystery and took an intriguing tilt into the still somewhat plausible fantasy domain. Also, though I'm not from Baltimore, I felt a closeness to the city as I read this story. Its unobtrusive presence was nicely woven in throughout. Please publish the next Raymond Mallard mystery!
Wow! This new, character-driven story is certainly something different. Raymond Mallard is the character and he is a complex and compelling detective. The story is clearly the beginning of a transformation for him, and we get to go along on the journey. Unlike so many mystery/fantasy crossover stories on the market these days, this one does not set up the reader to root for a seduction by the antagonist. In fact, very few readers will be rooting for this hard nosed detective to fall under the sway of incubus and "fallen angel" in this incarnation, Leviathan Langston. Yes, there is a mystery story in the middle of it all, and it's quite well-written by this new author, but it's characters will catch you and keep you turning the pages. Can't wait for the next one.
This book is responsible for several consecutive nights of lost sleep, as I couldn't quit reading once I started! Quite compelling story, and what makes this novel stand out even more are the complex personal struggles of the main character and those surrounding him. It is apparent that the author is a psychologist, and has drawn upon her emotional expertise to create multi-faceted characters whose inner lives and conflicts are as fascinating as their external battles!! Raymond's internal dialogue weaves seamlessly in and out of the story's action, and provides a dimension not generally found in most murder mysteries. I can't wait for the next book, as I am anxious to follow Raymond's inner journey as well as his next exciting case!!
